The Directors Cut of the Alien Abduction Project
The streaming file is fairly large -- if playback stutters pause the video until the blue bar stops getting wider.
This was my first all in-studio shoot, and was the most complex preproduction process to date. We shot on 16mm and captured audio to mini-disc, so it was also the most complex post production I've worked on to date. The shoot was smooth, and mostly flawless. Everyone did a fantastic job, and we were able to wrap with a little time to spare (which never happens).
The final product turned out almost exactly as I imagined it would -- which is a first. The trick now is to start imagining grander things :-)
Starring Chris Pope, Alisha Patterson, Ben Yennie and George Weingard. Jim Hale as Director of Photography, David Garza as Assistant Director, Tim Hardy was our Gaffer.
In Captivity accepted to student show
Fri, 12/14/2007 - 15:01 — davidIn Captivity from the Alien Abduction Project was accepted into the Fall 2007 student show at the Colorado Film School, which was exciting.
I come from a school of philosophy that believes that no project is ever completed, only abandoned. We're not quite ready to let this one go yet...
AAP introduction
Sun, 05/20/2007 - 00:27 — davidThis project was inspired by Gary Larson's "The Far Side" comics -- if you met the 80's in person you know what I'm talking about.
Along the way I was also influenced by the short Sci Fi channel "if" segments where short and bizarre scenarios (not really enough to call them stories) play out in 30 to 60 seconds.
Another data point for you -- I grew up with rodents. My best friend in Jr. High was a white rat. Gerbils. Hamsters. I kept all manner of tiny mammals in my room. And those that didn't bite were delightful.
About the alien abduction pinups
Fri, 04/20/2007 - 00:41 — davidTwo cultural benchmarks for you to consider:
Point one: Vintage Star Trek. Captain Kirk. Too much of the blue stuff. And in shimmers a carnivorous green beauty -- the Orion Slave Girl. He's rendered helpless.
Alien Abduction Pinups
Wed, 04/18/2007 - 05:40 — davidThe script for the Alien Abduction Project called for an orion slave girl pinup poster in the alien's room, so we obligingly created one. The shoot was a lot of fun for everyone involved.

AAP Casting George
Fri, 03/23/2007 - 00:14 — davidWe created custom masks for the aliens, which required making casts of the actor's faces. This was the first time Matt (the makeup guy) or I attempted something like this -- we really appreciate both George and Ben allowing us to smother them with weird blue rubber stuff.
If Necessity is the mother of Invention, then Laziness is his deadbeat father. And Greed is his gold-digging wife.
