Director's Statement

I'm a dork.

I grew up watching PBS, and was always fascinated by the science programming. Dispassionate voices described relativity, newton's laws, the scope of the universe and the challenges of using the scientific method.

As a five-year-old I could sometimes follow what they were talking about, sometimes not. But there was always an expectation that what they were talking about actually worked. It was exhilarating.

After a while the content and syntax of their discussions stopped being important. The shape and texture of the words became a sort of technological jabberwocky. It would wash over me, and it was beautiful.

Later, a similar voice with a more whimsical vocabulary gained wide use in many television shows -- the most prolific early example being Star Trek TNG. Their writers brought faux-science gibberish to the level of inspired beat poetry.

The tradition continues today, in programs like House, CSI, Fringe, etc. But the magic is gone from these latecomers. Something special remains attached to those bygone days of Cosmos, and the PBS science lectures.

One of my goals for Second Chance was to recapture some of that essence -- you will have to determine whether or not the production team and I were successful. Either way we all hope you enjoy the show.

If Necessity is the mother of Invention, then Laziness is his deadbeat father. And Greed is his gold-digging wife.
