All the Earth's cities have grown together, and automated servants have displaced most of the human population.
Gary, one of the rare human beings, is convinced against his better judgement to jailbreak his housekeeping automaton and install an app to make her "better company at home".
Gary barely survives their first encounter in bed. Her primary objective frustrated, she obstinately continues to seek other ways to make him happy.
Meanwhile, he meets and falls for a real woman named Margaret. She hops trains on the world's interconnected subway systems on a quest to find the edge of the city.
Just as Gary finds both joy and salvation in Margaret's faith in the world beyond, Gary's robot continues relentlessly on her programmed path to discover -- then become -- whatever it is that makes him happy.
